It's hard to ignore the stern granite cliffs that loom over Palmer Gulch. Just the other side of the ridge lie the world-famous Cathedral Spires and some of the world's best crack climbing. Heroes have passed this way--Royal Robbins, John Gill, Paul Piana. Herb and Jan Conn did much to further climbing in the sixties, and still live near Custer State Park. You can stop in Hill City, and get expert instruction and friendly advice from the folks at Sylvan Rocks.

But my childhood fascination with scaling Elkhorn, spurred on by accounts told me by my Aunt Ellen fueled my first experience with an "easy" Class Four climb.
